I put off move-in once I realized how much work cleaning, painting, and replacing appliances would be. Here's my take on appliances. Always give Best Buy a chance, knowledgable non commissioned customer service, free delivery and haul away, and longer term interest free financing. And for other stuff, around here, Home Depot is much better than Lowes.
Side by Side Frigidaire Refrigerator from Best Buy - $764 - Free Delivery, Haul Away, and Installation
The following appliances were installed DIY (Do it yourself) with the help of George Williams, my electrician friend from church. I figured if I were going to hire a plumber OR an electrician (but not both) I'd hire the electrician to do this stuff, since electricity kills and I also needed ceiling fans, fixtures, updated outlets, switches, etc.
This was a learning process for both of us but we both have a little more cash in our pockets and a little more household wisdom than we would otherwise.
Whirlpool Quiet Power III Dishwasher from Best Buy - $339 - Free Delivery and Haul Away (which means you have to have the old one pulled out and ready for them to pick up, which I didn't, so now I wait for bulk pickup)
40 Gallon, Medium Hot Water Heater from Home Depot - $289 -
Flushed hot water pipes (Lesson learned: never drink or use water from the hot water tap for cooking, always heat cold water since the hot water heater has sediment, lead soldering, and the like)
Both required a second trip to Home Depot for new modern pipes/hoses that don't leak. Next I'm going to attempt to change the bathroom faucet myself.
